Sanilac FFA awarded teaching garden grant

Tractor Supply Company has awarded a $2,200 grant to the FFA chapter at the Sanilac Career Center.

Sanilac’s grant, one of 14 awarded to FFA chapters in Michigan, will be used for a teaching garden at the Career Center for local food production.

According to the chapter’s application to Tractor Supply Company, which has a location in Sandusky, “The goal is to create a market garden that could easily be duplicated at a member’s home. The focus will be on intensive crop rotation and season extension. The grant will assist with the purchase of basic gardening tools, tillers, caterpillar tunnel, planters, weed suppression fabrics, etc.

“FFA members will learn to plan, plant, cultivate, harvest and market a complete season of vegetable crops. Additionally, students will learn safe produce handling and packaging, customer relations, money skills and more.

“With the growing popularity of farmers markets and interest in local foods, students will be able to learn the skills required to own and operate their own business. The big goal would be to develop the skills and confidence in students so that they will feel capable of starting their own businesses."
