Photo by Susan Morse Coach Pitts on this year’s team: “While we are still very young, many of our underclassmen have a whole year of varsity softball under their belt. We finished strong last year, but we have a lot of work to do. I think hitting and starting pitching will be a strength; defense and pitching depth has some work to do. Our goal is to continually get better and be competitive in the league. We are hoping to hit our stride later in the season. We are really looking to see how much better we can get.”

Coach Pitts on the GTC East: “Sandusky and Ubly have been tough the last few years and this year will be no exception. While Memphis, Marlette and Harbor Beach are young, they should be improved from a year ago. It should be a very competitive league.”

Top returning players: John Tkalcac (Jr., C/ OF; .329 BA; HM All-County; “John is very athletic and versatile player on our roster; he will be able to fill in at multiple positions….and will be at bat in the middle of the line-up” – Coach Welke); Ben Bovenschen (Sr., 1B/C/OF; .309 BA, 18 RBI; 2nd Team All-GTC East/HM All-County; “We will rely on Ben’s heavy bat this year. His leadership, on and off the field, will be a huge factor in our team’s success” – Coach Welke); Matt Calabro (Sr., SS/2B; .289BA; HM All-GTC East; “Matt’s knowledge of the game and field awareness will definitely set a standard on the team. He leads by example, and his positive energy on the field will propel us in tight situations: - Coach Welke); Ricky Lindsay (Jr., P/CF/IF; “Rick’s arm on the mound and quickness in the field will give us options, defensively, this year. Top new prospects: Dan Petrias (So., IF/OF); “Dan is a very athletic player that can play multiple positions. He is a very hard worker that will develop as the season progresses” – Coach Welke); Ben Garcia (Jr., 3B/OF; “Ben is an extremely hard worker that will be able to succeed in any role that he is given” – Coach Welke)

Coach Welke on this year’s team: “This is a very athletic group; every day we are working to play smart, but aggressive, baseball. We are pushing for consistency and the ability to execute during all situations. The mix of great leadership and young players can prove to be our biggest strength.”

Coach Welke on the GTC East: “Many teams in this league, including Memphis, Ubly and Harbor Beach, have had a lot of success the past couple of years. They are well-coached teams and have some very athletic players. We have had some great games with them and look forward to another round of great baseball this season.”

Brown City Green Devils Varsity Boys Track

Coach Blake on this year’s team: “This year I am excited that Marian Martus and Brett Metzger (both former track standouts in high school) have joined me in coaching. I am very excited to work with the two of them and help develop our athletes. Our numbers have increased greatly this year, from 17 to 23, and we are happy to see that. We have already began practices and we have a great group of guys that are working hard and having a good time. I am just excited to work with this group of individuals and see how they grow as a team.”

Coach Blake on the GTC East: “Last year we placed third at the league meet. We are just hoping for improvement, both individually and as a team.”

Coach: Don Twiss: 2nd season (since retiring as head coach, for many seasons, in 2002)

2017 season: GTC East, 2nd; Regional, 3rd

Key losses to graduation: Madison Woodall; “key leader on the team; she was the only senior” – Coach Twiss)

Top returning athletes: Alexandra Hanson (Sr.; sprints; D3 all-state in ’17 in there events – 100, 400, 200); Amethyst Millsap (Jr., hurdles, sprints; D3 all-state in 100H); Carleigh Randolph (Jr., sprints/relays; “our No. 2 sprinter and key to our relays” – Coach Twiss)

Top new prospects: Juliana Hanson “Should be an outstanding sprinter” – Coach Twiss); Olivia Bovenschen (shot put); Isabel Woodall (High jump)

Coach Twiss on this year’s team: “We have some good sprinters on the team. We are trying to improve our field events. In last year’s regional we finished third and did not score a single point in the field events.”

Coach Twiss on the GTC East: “This year’s league looks just like the past two. Marlette is the team to beat. That is a very well-coached and strong program. Ubly could sneak in with their distance runners.”
