Robbery shootout suspect to be examined

Preston Jack Preston Jack The surviving suspect in a botched robbery of a medical marijuana grow operation will be examined for competency to stand trial.

Preston Jack, 30, of Flint is charged with 11 criminal counts ranging from assault with intent to murder, armed robbery and felony firearms, to home invasion and receiving and concealing a stolen vehicle.

A preliminary examination in Sanilac County District Court, scheduled for Feb. 5, was postponed pending the psychiatric evaluation of his ability to aid in his legal defense.

The charges are in connection with the Nov. 19 robbery-shootout at a residence on Holbrook Road in Greenleaf Township.

Of the four suspects involved in the robbery, two were shot and killed after breaking into the house, two were arrested and one of those arrested later committed suicide in the Sanilac County Jail.

According to Sheriff Garry Biniecki, three male suspects broke into the house around 5 a.m., shooting the homeowner who was at the kitchen table in the leg.

A second resident came out of a bedroom and returned fire. One suspect was shot and killed in the house, while a second was shot and later found dead in a car by police. The deceased were identified as Quantize Bruce, 20, of Flint and Keith Saunders, 26, of Flint.

Authorities apprehended Jack and a fourth suspect, Stephen Shimmel, 47, of Flint after a search of the area.

Shimmel was found hanged in his jail cell hours after being arraigned in court.
