Geiger, Cook lead BC past ‘Skins

Open GTC East play

BROWN CITY – The Brown City Green Devils want to be in the mix for a GTC East boys basketball title this winter. And, they have a talented duo to help take them there.

Andrew Geiger and Calvin Cook combined for 43 points Friday night to help the Devils pull away to a, 69-58, victory over the Sandusky Redskins in the division opener.

Brown City, now 1-0 in the East and 4-3 overall, held the lead most of the night but did not put the ‘Skins away until the fourth quarter. The Devils sank 17 of 21 free throws in those final eight minutes, including an 11-for-12 effort at the stripe from Cook, who finished with 18 points.

Anthony Troshak, BC head coach, said the game saw plenty of whistles from the officials in the crucial East opener.

“It was a tough game because it was physical and didn’t have much flow. Officials called it tight both ways, so we just had to adapt and adjust.”

There were 48 fouls called in the game, leading to 65 attempted free throws.

The Devils jumped out to a, 16-8, lead in the first quarter, but the ‘Skins came back to close the gap to four points, 25-21, at the break. BC led by six, 44-38, going into the fourth quarter.

Overall, Troshak said his team did what it had to do to gain a crucial win.

“I thought we played solid defense at times, but we failed to rotate a few times, which allowed for Sandusky to get some easy buckets.” Troshak added, “Matt Calabro (Sr.., G) did a good job on Jared Bender and slowed him down a little – he really makes (Sandusky) go. We also rebounded well. Sandusky is a tough, well-coached team, so we are pleased to come out on top.”

Geiger, a 6’3” junior, led BC with 25 points while Jared McPhail added 11, including three triples. Geiger and Cook each grabbed 12 rebounds and Calabro finished with seven points and six assists.

Sandusky was sparked by senior Cody Hoag with a career-high 26 points, including 14 in the second half.

Center Josh Sauer (6’6”) was next in scoring with 11.

Brown City will host Ubly (1-0, 5-1) in a key GTC East battle this Friday night. Sandusky will try to bounce back on Friday when Harbor Beach comes to the Thumb Dome for a division battle.
