Walter “Walt” L. Horst, age 83, of Sandusky, passed away at his home January 6, 2018. He was born September 23, 1934 in Akron, Michigan, to the late John and Zella (Fuester) Horst. Walt was married to his wife of 62 years, Norine (Aldrich) Horst, on August 13, 1955 in Fairgrove, Michigan. Walt graduated from Akron High School in 1953. He was a lifelong farmer, beginning in Akron and moving to Sandusky in 1956. Becoming active in the community, Walt served on the Sanilac County Drain Commission Board, and served in multiple positions on the Watertown Township Board. Walt was a longtime member of the Sandusky Presbyterian Church, serving on the board of trustees, and as an elder. In retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, and gardening. His family will remember him for his integrity, work ethic, and his devotion to them. Walt always loved and had a great interest in sports, and playing cards at every opportunity.

He is survived by his wife, Norine, of Sandusky; three sons, Randall (Kathleen) Horst, of Sandusky, Gregory (Tina) Horst, of Carsonville, Michael (Cindy) Horst, of Wisconsin; 13 grandchildren, Jennifer (William) Lentner, Jonathon (Mia) Horst, Joshua (Josette) Horst, Justan (Kimmy) Horst, Andrew (Kayla) Horst, Cory Horst (Holly Avendt), Hannah Horst, Jacob Horst, Jessica Horst, Jaime (Andy) Pfantz, Jacqueline (Daniel) AlderseBaes, Jordan Horst, and John Horst (Destiny Ange); 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Norine (Jerry) Kruchkow, of West Virginia, and Joanne (Dean) Kritzman, of Deckerville; and several nieces and nephews.

Walt was preceded in death by eight sisters and brothers-in-law, Maude Hessey (Gib), Ruby Peck (Russell), Mildred Keilitz (Otto), Gwendolyn Llewellyn (Tim), Maxine Fox (Charlie), Donna Llewellyn (Arthur), Marian Rayl (Edwin), and Ethyl Albertson (Jim).

A Christian service will be held Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at 11 a.m. with viewing from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the Sandusky Presbyterian Church located at 104 South Lexington Street, Sandusky.

Memorials in memory of Walt may be made to the Sandusky Presbyterian Church.

A Memorial and interment service will be held in the spring.
