EVERGREEN TWP. — Additional camping sites are coming to Evergreen County Park.

Parks board member Jim Bowerman told county commissioners last week that construction of 14 new full-hook sites is planned this fall.

Bowerman attended the Sanilac board meeting on Oct. 3 as a member of the parks board and chairman of the pension board.

Commissioners approved the engineering services bid of $33,480 from BMJ Engineers & Surveyors, Port Huron, for the expansion that will bring the total number of sites – rustic and full hookup – to 160.

The cost of constructing the sites is estimated at $109,000.

Bowerman was also at the meeting because of a pension-related dispute with Brenda Kaufman, retired executive assistant with the Sanilac County Drug Task Force, over her retirement benefits.

Kaufman claims her pension was figured at a lower rate because it was incorrectly based on the retirement plan for elected and appointed officials, rather than the sheriff department’s collective bargaining unit which has a higher rate.

Commissioners heeded the advice of the pension board’s legal counsel, Kevin Berneys, that there was no documentation to back up Kaufman’s claim of being in the sheriff department plan, and that switching her to the plan could “open a Pandora’s box” with other retirees.

Instead, Berneys offered a way to resolve the dispute.

Since there are records showing the drug task force paid into Kaufman’s retirement at the sheriff department rate, the DTF board could request a refund from the pension board for the difference in the contributions over the years, and pass it along to Kaufman as a bonus.

Administrator Kathy Dorman said it would be easy to calculate the amount of the refund if there were a request from the drug task force board.

In other business, commissioners reap- pointed Loraine Reish of Forester Township as the Democratic Party representative on the county board of canvassers, and Lynda Graves of Sandusky as the Republican Party representative and Justin Faber as the Republican Party alternate on the board.

Commissioners also appointed Marjorie Ross of Marlette to the county transportation board.
