Let’s talk about Sandusky!

It’s time for the biggest event of the summer season, the Sanilac County 4-H Fair at the fairgrounds in Sandusky! The 2017 fair runs from Sunday, Aug. 20 to Saturday, Aug. 26. Thousands of visitors will take in the activities that include 4-H exhibits, carnival and midway (starting Aug. 21 at 5 p.m.), grandstand shows, livestock sale and more. Of special note, the new Miracle of Life exhibit will be on display in the newly constructed building. The educational exhibit is led by Sanilac FFA students, boosters and alumni and features the birth of baby livestock animals during the fair. Grandstand shows begin Aug. 20 with a Gospel Sing, and continue each night of fair week, with a tractor and pickup pulls on Aug. 21, Bump-n-Run on Aug. 22, New Style Figure 8 on Aug. 23, Super Kicker Rodeo on Aug. 24 and Aug. 25, and Demolition Derby on Aug. 26.

Summer music continues on the courthouse lawn! The 2017 Lawn Chair Music Series offers free concerts at the gazebo on Friday evenings at 7 p.m. On Aug. 4, the Motown Eagles bring their rendition of The Eagles to the Sandusky stage, playing the rock band’s hits that span four decades. Then, on Aug. 11, the Pole Barn Rebels perform their authentic old-school country sound reminiscent of Waylon Jennings, Jerry Reed, Johnny Cash and others. The Rebels’ performance will conclude the 2017 music series.

Summertime continues with Vacation Bible School at two local churches. Camp Out VBS is at Mooretown Brethren In Christ Church, Friday and Saturday, Aug. 4-5, for ages pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Free dinner from 5:30-6 p.m., program runs from 6-8:30 p.m. – parents welcome. Register online at mooretownbic@gmail.com or at the church Thursday, Aug. 3, 6-7 p.m., 2450 W. Snover Rd., Sandusky. Galactic Starveyors VBS is at Countryside Free Methodist Church, Monday, Aug. 7 thru Friday, Aug. 11 from 9-11:45 a.m. Games, stories, crafts, music, snacks and more for ages 2 years old through 6th grade. Stay informed about the dangers of drug abuse. The topic of this month’s Lunch and Learn is “Latest on Drug Abuse” with guest speaker Steve McKenney from the Sanilac County Drug Task Force. The program is Wednesday, Aug. 16 from 12-1 p.m. at McKenzie Health System Dining Room, 120 Delaware Street. Cost is $5. Registration required, call 810-648-6127.

Healthy eating is the topic of this month’s Healthy Lifestyle Workshop. Learn about “Healthy Lunches” on Monday, Aug. 28 at 5:30 p.m. in the McKenzie Health System Dining Room, 120 Delaware Street. Free, but registration required, 810-648-6127.

Lace up your dancing shoes for the Thumb Dance Club! The Saturday evening dances are Aug. 12 featuring Lighthouse Three, and Aug. 26 with Dick Hedrich & Son. Popsicles in the Park happens Sept. 1, 3-4 p.m., at Doerr Field Park. Enjoy popsicles and fun in the park! Kids of all ages are invited for free popsicles, games and crafts. Sponsored by KIDCITY Children’s Ministry of Countryside Free Methodist Church.
