Mike Hugan Mike Hugan DECKERVILLE — Mike Hugan is a contract away from becoming this school district’s next superintendent.

Hugan, high school principal at neighboring Harbor Beach Community Schools, was hired by the Deckerville Board of Education last week to take charge come July 1.

The board voted 6-1 to hire Hugan following his second interview on June 7. He was one of two finalists, besting Jason McElrath, high school principal and superintendent at Hillman Schools.

Voting to hire Hugan were board members Jason McConnachie, Amy Dumaw, Curt Vogel, Michele Pattullo, Alysha Peruski and board President Jon Block. Voting no Spencer Osborne.

“There was one dissenting vote,” Block said in an email to the News. “That member did however publicly voice that they would fully support Mr. Hugan as our superintendent.”

Block continued, “I would comment that choosing the leader of a public school district is a tremendous responsibility, opinions and emotions can run high. MLI (Michigan Leadership Institute) and Charlie Andrews provided our district with an excellent candidate pool and a professional process to follow. All the candidates were qualified and held strong attributes.

“After careful consideration and extensive review of applications along with reference checks the majority of the board came to consensus that Mr. Hugan was the best fit. While the vote was not unanimous I know our board and the integrity they bring to the table. They unanimously will support our new leader. I am pleased we have reached the end of the process and look forward to a bright future at Deckerville Community Schools.”

The board must still negotiate Hugan’s contract. Block appointed Osborne and Peruski to serve on the contract committee.

Hugan will succeed Tricia Pawlowski who has been superintendent since 2010. Pawlowski will step down June 30, and move into her new role as special project coordinator until she retires on Sept. 30.

Hugan, who was passed over for superintendent at Harbor Beach, has been high school principal there for six years. Prior to that he was a middle school principal for three years in Potterville. He holds bachelor’s degrees in biology and English and attended the Michigan Leadership Institute’s Superintendent Preparation Academy Series.

“I am truly honored to have been chosen by Deckerville Community Schools’ Board of Education as the next superintendent,” said Hugan. “I am looking forward to working with the board, staff, students, parents and community to move Deckerville Community Schools forward into the future.”
