Challenging early-season schedule has Lady ‘Skins at 3-5

MILLINGTON – In their first full week of play, the Sandusky softball team saw three talented teams. While they went 2-4 against state-ranked Reese, USA, and Millington, plus Caro, that competition should get them ready for GTC East play.

“We were battling some of the area’s top competition,” pointed out Danny Franzel, Sandusky head coach, who added that it should make his own strong Lady Redskin squad even better. “With talent up and down the line-up, the Sandusky softball program is looking to have some fun in 2017.”

On Saturday, the Lady ‘Skins competed in the Millington (No. 3 in Div. 3) tournament. They lost to Millington, 4-0, in the first game and bounced back to whip Caro, 8-3, in the next. In the win over Caro, Sandusky had a solid pitching performance from junior Haley Nelson, but the offense also provided some fireworks. Freshman Paige Patterson hit her first career home run and added two singles while Madysen Jansen homered and also laced out two doubles. Nelson aided her own cause with two singles and Madison Armstrong had a pair of base hits.

In the loss to Millington, the ‘Skins had just two hits, a single each from Nelson and Jansen. Sophomore Taylor Calkins pitched well but took the loss.

Sandusky 11, 5 Reese 1, 15

The Lady ‘Skins split with the Rockets (No. 8 in Div. 3) on Thursday. In the opening win, they scored 10 times in the fifth inning. Leading the way in that game was Paige Patterson with a 4-for-4 effort, including a double, along with Jansen and Armstrong both banging out a pair of doubles. Meanwhile, Gabby Gough and Calkins each had a double and two singles.

The Rockets’ bats exploded early in the night cap and Sandusky could not catch up.

Paige Patterson led the ‘Skins’ offense with a double and two singles and Katelyn Patterson had a home run and single.

‘Skins drop pair to USA

On Tuesday, Sandusky lost twice to the Patriots (No. 2 in Div. 4).

Katelyn Patterson belted a grand slam in the first game against USA, but the ‘Skins still lost, 9-7. Sophomore Gabby Gough also homered for Sandusky.

The ‘Skins were mercied in game two against the Patriots, who were the ‘D’ state champs a year ago.

Sandusky 5-2, Yale 7-1: The Lady Redskins opened their softball season on March 27 with a non-league split with Yale.

Jansen picked up the win on the mound and Calkins had the save in game two. Jansen aided her own cause at the plate with a triple, single and a run scored. Paige Patterson, who had a single and double, scored the winning run. Katelyn Patterson added a double and single.

In the opening loss, Sandusky had 11 hits, including two each from Nelson, Paige Patterson, Jansen, and Katelyn Patterson. Armstrong added a double. Nelson was the starting and losing pitcher.
