Local quiz bowl teams head to state tournament

Thumb Area Quiz Bowl League

The long-awaited Class A, B, and C/D State Championship High School Quiz Bowl Tournament takes place this weekend (April 20-21) at Michigan State University.

Teams across the state that have qualified by winning a tournament during the 2016-2017 school year were invited to attend.

The Thumb Area Quiz Bowl League has six of their eight schools competing this year. Sanilac County has teams from Peck, Carsonville-Port Sanilac, Brown City and Sandusky making the trip, while Huron County is fielding fields from Bad Axe and Ubly. All six teams are taking part in the twenty-two team Class C/D tournament.

Round one on Friday includes Peck versus Brethren, Ubly versus White Cloud and CPS versus Lakeview. Round two action will see Bad Axe take on the winner of Kent City versus Fulton, Brown City face-off against Hackett Catholic (Kalamazoo), and Sandusky battle against the winner of CPS versus Lakeview.

All winning teams will advance in the brackets on Friday until a loss occurs. The wining team from Friday’s competition will then face the winning team from Saturday’s “losers bracket” competition for the state championship.

Bad Axe High was the runner up in last year’s tournament while Marlette High was the runner-up the previous year. Both Bad Axe and Marlette had to face teams from across the state that were competing in the Class C/D division when, in fact, they should have been playing in the Class A tournament. After a series of discussions on this concern that TAQBL Director Bruce Irland initiated, the state rules have been clarified and Class C/D schools will now face only other teams from the same size schools.
