Right to Life oratory winners announced

Right to Life of Sanilac County held its 8th Annual High School Oratory Contest on Saturday March 4 at the Sandusky Knights of Columbus Hall. Four contestants compete for the following cash prizes: First place - $300; Second place - $200 and Third place - $100. Contestants prepared and gave a 5-7 minute speech on a choice of 4 pro-life topics. They were judged by a panel of 3 judges.

First place and $300 was awarded to Meriwether Tanis of Silverwood for her speech on abortion entitled, “America’s Awful Secret”. Meriwether is a home-schooled freshman. Second place and $200 went to Carolynn Caporuscio of Sandusky. Carolynn is a senior from Sandusky High School. Third place and $100 was won by Maggie Mutch of Marlette. Maggie is a sophomore from Marlette High School. An honorable mention went to Riley Tanis, a homeschooled junior from Silverwood.

Meriwether will move on to the State Oratory Contest held by Right to Life of Michigan near Lansing on May 6. In June, the state winner will compete with teens from across the nation at the National Right to Life Committee Oratory Contest.

Meriwether will also be giving her winning speech at Right to Life’s Focus on Life benefit dinner on Thursday, March 23 in Sandusky at the Countryside Free Methodist Church Family Center.
