Pirates win Mooney tourney

Dylan Dankenbring Peck Dylan Dankenbring Peck MARINE CITY – The Peck Pirates were off to a slow start in their boys hoops season in early December.

But, they changed that around last week at the Marine City Cardinal Mooney Tournament.

The Pirates claimed the championship trophy on Wednesday night behind a great second half effort in their, 57-36, victory over the host Cardinals.

After trailing the Cardinals by six points, 29-23, in the first half, the Pirates turned the heat up on defense in the final quarters to breeze to the win, their third in six games this winter. Peck held the Mooney to just seven points in that second half.

“In the first half,” noted Pirate coach Jeremy Abrego, “we did some things differently, defensively, that we hadn’t worked on much more. “Then, in the second half, we didn’t allow much penetration and we got out and contested their shots. I think we just started getting use to that defense.

“Offensively,” Abrego added, “we were really patient the whole game, and that was a big part (of the win).”

Six-foot-six, senior post Dylan Dankenbring was a big factor inside for the Pirates, finishing with a game-high 24 points and 15 rebounds. Guard Kody LaFleur added 20 points and Chris Beurmann tossed in eight.

In the semifinals on Tuesday night, the Pirates pulled away from Algonac in the fourth quarter. After leading by eight, 26-18, at the break, Peck saw the margin slip to one, 39-38, in the third. The Pirate defense then held the Muskrats to just five points in the final quarter.

Dankenbring again led Peck with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Chipping in, offensively, were Ean Sell with 12 points and LaFleur with eight.
