Marlette freshman wins first high school meet

Photo by Dale Ball In her first-ever varsity race, Marlette ninth grader Riley Ford claimed first place at last Thursday’s Brown City Invitational cross country meet.

Ford, who finished the course in 20:53.61, helped the Lady Red Raiders take third place in the team standings, which included 12 full squads.

Ubly won the team title with 89 while Marine City and Marlette were next with 95 and 119, respectively.

Two other Sanilac County runners finished among the top 10. Brown City sophomore Whitley Blake was fourth in 21:29.50 and Deckerville junior Kylee Colesa was sixth with a 21:39.16.

In the boys competition, Cass City, led by all-state runner CarLee Stimpfel, grabbed the team title with 86 points, edging out Bad Axe, which had 89. Marlette was third with 111.

Photo by Dale Ball Stimpfel finished in 16:05.96, nearly 1:23.0 ahead of the second place finisher, Alex Grifka of Ubly.

Four runners from Sanilac teams were in the top 11: Sandusky’s Brandon Hughes (4th, 17:45.7) and Colton Cowley (11th, 18:53.88), Deckerville’s Stephen Barker (7th, 18:31.0), and Brown City’s Brady Kaufman (9th, 18:44.53).

Marlette was led by Donald Dunn’s 13th place time of 19:09.32.
