Just ask the Michigan Bureau of Health Care Services, which conducts annual inspection surveys of long-term care facilities.

Only about two percent of the 451 state-licensed, Medicare and Medicaid long-term care units receive no deficiencies during the annual inspections. The average number of citations is 5.95, according to 2014 data.

It’s been more than a decade since the county facility has been citation free.

“I’m elated,” said MCF Administrator Kim Klida, regarding the May 1-3 inspection that surveyed all aspects of the facility’s operations, from the maintenance department and kitchen, to the rehabilitation unit and nursing care.

“I attribute it to our staff. We have outstanding staff. They really care about the residents like their own family.”

The Marlette Extended Care Facility, in 2014, also received a perfect inspection.

During the on-site inspection, Bureau of Health Services staff met with residents and their families, interviewed employees, shadowed employees as they worked, including the nursing staff as they dispensed medications and provided treatment to residents. Inspectors also checked the kitchen for cleanliness and cooking temperatures, emergency preparedness, infection control, staff education, etc.

“They covered the entire facility,” said Klida.

The 104-bed MCF employs about 200 people.
