2014 Walk to Remember and 5K Run raises money for respite care

The 2014 Walk to Remember and 5K Run is just around the corner. Get out your sports shoes, and walk or run for a great cause.

The annual event, sponsored by Sanilac County Building Ties, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 6. Registration takes place at 9 a.m. at Diamond Trail Park, Sandusky; and the Walk and Run begins at 9:30. Registration is $20.

The Walk will take place around the Diamond Trail, and the 5K course is run throughout the city of Sandusky. Awards in the 5K Run will be given to the top three places in each age group, and first overall male/female. A light breakfast is available before the event, and numerous door prizes, donated by area businesses, will be given away to participants after the Walk and 5K are completed.

“We were very happy with the results of the 2013 Walk and 5K Run,” reports Cheryl Hieber, Walk to Remember Committee chairperson. “All the money raised stays in the county to support the Respite Care Fund which provides financial assistance for respite care for caregivers of loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of permanent memory loss.

As in 2013, autographed copies of “When Life Hands You Alzheimer’s, Make Aprons!” will be available for sale. The book, authored by Sanilac County native Gwen O’Leary, depicts the joys and stresses of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s. Net proceeds from the sale of all books sold in Sanilac County are donated to the Walk to Remember Respite Care Fund.

For more information about the walk or the book, call Cheryl Hieber at 989-872-8070 or Valerie Hudgens at 810-987-9337.
