Alcohol suspected in teens’ car crash

MARION TWP. — Two 18-yearolds driving to Deckerville High School Thursday were injured in a rollover accident that may have involved drinking.

The one-vehicle crash occurred at 7:30 a.m. on Deckerville Road near Hunt Road.

The preliminary investigation showed the driver was driving recklessly at a high rate of speed, according to Sgt. Mark Siemen of the Sanilac County Sheriff Department.

The driver, heading west, lost control of the vehicle which crossed the centerline, came back across the road, entered a ditch and rolled over.

The driver and passenger sustained non-life threatening injuries and were transported to Deckerville Community Hospital for treatment.

Their names were withheld pending further investigation of the crash. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the accident, and seatbelts may not have been used.

“I would like to remind the parents of all high school students to pay attention to where and what they are doing,” said Sheriff Garry Biniecki.

“Remember the underage drinking campaign, ‘It’s Up To Adults to Prevent Underage Drinking”.

Deckerville police, fire and ambulance services assisted at the scene.
