Sandusky welcomes Thumb Festival

Four days of activities for the whole family happen this week during the Thumb Festival in Sandusky.

The annual summer event sponsored by the Sandusky Chamber of Commerce runs from June 21 through June 24. Thurs., June 21 Join the Glow Walk. The SAVE Council fundraiser benefits the Eva’s Place Shelter. The walk begins at 9:30 p.m. at Diamond Trail Park, south of Maple Valley Elementary on Maple Valley Street. The Friends of the Sandusky District Library are holding a book sale Thurs., June 21- Sat., June 23 at the library on E. Sanilac Ave. Thursday and Friday hours are 9:30 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Fri., June 22 This year’s Senior Fair honors Betty Fuentes of Sandusky, a longtime resident and community volunteer. The Fair featuring dozens of vendors with lots of free goodies runs from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the high school gym. Learn who’s the newest and littlest royalty in Sanilac County! The Little Prince and Princess crowning is at 6:30 p.m. in the courthouse gazebo! After the crowning, stick around the gazebo for more entertainment: The Thumbuddy crownings at 6:45 p.m. followed by Lawn Chair Music at 7 p.m. (bring your lawn chair). Friday also means fireworks. Fireworks will be shot-off at dusk from the industrial park. Then, watch for the world record attempt rocket launch east of town! Sat., June 23 Another day filled with activities. The popular Craft and Antique Show returns to the courthouse lawn from 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. Take in the action with the 3 on 3 Basketball at Doerr Field beginning at 8 a.m. Mom and Dad, bring the children to the Kids’ Fun Day outside I’d Rather Bee Scrapbooking from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., and take in the Pet Event at the Kids’ Fun Day from 12-5 p.m., capped off with the Pet & Pedal Parade at 5 p.m. If you like old cars, motorcycles and antique tractors - here are some events: the Car Show at Graff Chevrolet runs from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; the Motorcycle Show at the courthouse is from 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m.; and the Antique Tractor Show happens at Tri-County Equipment from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Enjoy the countryside from your ORV! The ORV Fun Run starts at 10 a.m. at the Firebird Theater. Several talent events are at the gazebo starting at 11 a.m. and continuing through the afternoon: The Sandusky Star competition, Project Sandusky and the Mock Rock-Lip Sync. Other Saturday activities are the Home Run Derby at Albrecht’s Field from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.; Amateur Radio Field Day south of Sandusky (call 810-837- 0722 for details), Car & Motorcycle Cruise from 4-5 p.m.; Bed Races on N. Elk St. at 6 p.m.; and the Bump-n-Run at the fairgrounds at 7 p.m. Sun., June 24 The final day of the Thumb Festival begins with a Fly In Breakfast at the city airport north of Sandusky hosted by the Sandusky Flying Club, from 7 a.m.-noon. There’s a Chicken Barbecue at Doerr Field 11 a.m., the Craft and Antique Show from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Amateur Radio Field Day and the big Thumb Festival Parade that marches at 1 p.m. The parade starts on Argyle Street outside Trelleborg, goes south on Dawson Street, east on Sanilac Avenue (M-46), south on Elk Street (M-19) and west on Speaker to Doerr Field.
