United Way begins campaign

19,000 pledge forms in the mail

Marie Thieleman Marie Thieleman The United Way of Sanilac County kicks off its 2012 campaign Sept. 8, with hopes of reaching the goal that’s eluded the agency in recent years.

The kick off reception and dinner is at Lakeview Hills Country Club in Lexington at 6 p.m.

But fundraising is already underway, with a mass mailing last week. Nineteen thousand nine-hundred ninetythree brochures and pledge forms were in the mail by Friday.

The goal is $165,000, the same figure the agency has been trying to reach the last couple years. The 2011 campaign raised $133,000.

“We’re going to do everything we can to hit that $165,000,” said Executive Director Marie Thieleman of Lexington. “We’re going to try our darndest.”

Thieleman will visit businesses and schools in the county this month to promote employee giving. The annual Eat all Day for United Way fundraiser will be held in October, and a second mass mailing is planned in November.

The need for the services provided by the 22 non-profit organizations supported by the United Way continues to grow.

“Our unemployment is still high in this county.” said Thieleman. “The need has not lessened. The need has increased for all the services that our agencies provide.”

She added, “many government programs have been reduced and the request for assistance is great. Please help those less fortunate in our county. The money you donate to United Way stays right here in Sanilac County to assist our neighbors.”

The cost of the kick off dinner is paid for by Talmer Bank and Trust. Other campaign sponsors include Bales Croswell Greenhouse, Barber Photography, Chemical Bank, Clear Ideas, Community Mental Health, Eastern Michigan Bank, Exchange State Bank, Graff Chevrolet Buick, Tri County Bank, and Sanilac County Bar Association.

The twenty-two agencies that benefit from the campaign are the Salvation Army, American Red Cross, United Hospice Service, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, S.A.V.E. Council, Sanilac Literacy, Catholic Family Services, Legal Services of Eastern Michigan, Lakeshore Legal Aid, Foster Grandparents, 4-H Council, Child Abuse Prevention Council, Kids’ Connection, The Harbor, Personal Growth Center, Alzheimer’s Association, Goodwill Industries, Blue Water Center for Independent Living, Habitat for Humanity, Safe Horizons, and Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
