Weather wins out; County track meet cancelled for this season

BY DALE BALL Sports Editor

This will be a spring to remember, just when you’d like to forget it.

It all is due to worst weather conditions for the months of April and May that I can remember in all of the years I’ve been working at the Sanilac County News. In that time, I’ve been associated with with an event that we have helped put on since 1975 - the Sanilac County News Tack & Field Meet, or just simply, ‘the County Meet’.

Regrettably, with some hesitation, the meet was postponed this past Thursday because of the poor weather conditions. In the end, the combination of rain and cold, enhanced by wind out of the north, was enough to call it off. Track meets have and will be run in similar conditions, particularly earlier in the high school season. But, this time the concern of young athletes risking injury. especially with those seeking their best performances of their lives at the MHSAA State Finals this Saturday, was enough reasoning to postpone this event.

The possibility of a make-up date was reviewed. The seven county athletic directors and I agreed that this coming Thursday, June 2, would be a possibility. But still, many of our top athletes would be participating in the Thumb Meet of Champions in Caro (last night, Tuesday) and then going on to State on Saturday. With that, and a couple of other lesser factors, the decision to cancel this year is the right one.

Only once in the last 36 years has the County Meet been postponed. It happened in 1978 when a torrential downpour flooded the facilities at Croswell-Lexington High School. However, at the time, the meet was run earlier in May. A make-up date was found and the County Meet went off well on May 27th. Soon after that, the date of the meet was permanently changed to the Thursday before Memorial Day weekend. And that, I believe, is where it will stay.

For the 39 Sanilac County high school track athletes that have one more meet this season, good luck to all at the State Finals!
