Make that seven in a row!
Regional string continues on the lanes for Lady ‘Skins
The tradition continues. The Sandusky girls bowling team ran their regional title streak to seven on Friday by capturing the trophy at Friday’s Division 4 event at Nightingale Lanes in Burton. In the seven years that the MHSAA has sponsored a post-season tournament in high school bowling, the Lady Redskins have responded every time. On Friday, without the services of junior standout Clelsea Ellis, Sandusky put up a score of 3,245, finishing easily ahead of second place Brown City with 2,819. The Lady Green Devils will join Sandusky at the Division 4 State Finals this Friday (Mar. 5) at Sunnybrook Lanes in Sterling Heights. The SHS girls had won six straight regionals under the direction of Coach Gordy Williams. Del Shea, the former SHS boys coach, took over for Williams this winter. Shea said the program means to uphold the tradition. “It’s always fun to win,” said Shea, whose squad is ranked No. 3 in Division 4. Looking ahead to State, where Sandusky has also done well over the years, Shea said there are no guarantees. “We have to bowl good,” he noted on his team’s chances of bringing home a State title. “Anybody can win it. First, we have to qualify (Friday morning) and get into the match-play (in the afternoon).” The Lady Redskins will be without Ellis, who suffered a torn muscle in her rib cage and is out for the seasaon. She was the UTBC singles champion this year and was the defending regional Singles titleist. “It’s always nice to have one of your best players available, but what do you do? We’ll go with what we’ve got,” said Shea, who does have depth on the team. SHS boys 2nd at regionals The Sandusky boys bowling team will be making its seventh consecutive trip to the State Finals this weekend after placing second at Nightingale Lanes last Friday. St. Charles won the regional with a pinfall of 3,707, Sandusky next with 3,625 and Dryden was the third qualifier with 3,240. Jeremy Johnston, SHS boys coach, said he was pleased with his team’s effort, particularly because of a very tough shot. “It was a little different shot than we practiced on,” noted Johnston. “But, I thought we adjusted well. “You can see that the scores were pretty low compared to other regionals. We were the only ones bowling on a wooden surface.” Johnston then added, “I think we’ll have a good showing next weekend.” The Redskins will also be at Sunnybrook Lanes this Friday. Cros-Lex girls heading to State The Lady Pioneers of Cros- Lex will be taking the trip to Jackson’s Airport Lanes this Friday. They earned their way to the MHSAA Division 3 State Finals, for the firtst time in four years, by placing third in the regioinal tournament at Candlelite Lanes in Bridgeport this past week. C-L, with a pinfall of 3,180, placed behind champioin Caro (3310), and runner-up Garber (3282). “I thought we could make it. I knew we had the potential,” said Coach Anita Mifsud. “The girls were steady all the way through. They pretty much bowled average or a little better.” Mifsud added that the lanes were a bit unusual, making for a little challenge. “They were half synthetric and half wooden, the ball kinda bounced after the start. I think we did good with the conditions we had.” The Lady Pioneers finished second to state-ranked Richmond in the Eastern Michigan Conference during the regular season. |
