Five involved in bar fight
      Sandusky police have submitted a draft report to the county prosecutor concerning a Nov. 13 bar fight. Five persons, all males, were involved in the altercation that occurred around 1:40 a.m. at Boots Saloon on South Elk Street, said Sgt. Dewayne Gilley.

Hospital event raises $21,000
     The Marlette Regional Hospital Development Council Community Relations Committee hosted the 21st Annual Tree of Shining Love event Dec. 6, honoring the late Jack Marsh, George Marsh and the entire Marsh family of Marlette for their long-time support of the Marlette community and hospital.

      BROWN CITY - City Council learned last week that a recent test of well number 4 revealed the arsenic level was 0.008, prompting a phone call from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.

Second man jailed for sexual abuse
      A 18-year-old Cass City man has been sentenced to jail for sexually abusing a handicapped person. Last week Circuit Court Judge Donald Teeple sentenced Timothy J. Vincent to 365 days in jail and five years of probation. Vincent must register as a sex offender and complete sexual offender treatment.

Sanilac United Way’s goal in sight
      The United Way of Sanilac County enters the New Year having reached 82 percent of its fundraising goal of $165,000. The agency so far has raised $135,000 and campaign organizers are cautiously optimistic that supporters will continue their contributions, said Director Kent France.

ISD adopts purchase card policy
      The Sanilac Intermediate School District Board recently adopted a new district purchase card policy. Superintendent Duane Lange explained some technology corporations will not use purchase orders so they will use the card for items such as books for community education courses.

Teen, 19, dies in crash
      FREMONT TWP. - A 19- year-old Brown City resident died from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle accident last Wednesday morning. Kayla Cain was driving a 1997 Pontiac Grand Am southbound on Todd Road when she apparently ran the stop sign at Gailbraith Line Road, the initial police investigation revealed.

      CROSWELL - Mayor Gary Macklem and Councilman Mike O’Vell received plaques thanking them for their service to Croswell at the city’s last council meeting for 2009. The councilmen chose not to run for reelection this year. The Dec. 21 meeting was their last.

Sandusky student expelled for knife
      The Sandusky School Board has expelled a male middle school student for bringing a knife to school. After a closed session about the issue during the Dec. 16 meeting, the board voted to expel the boy for 180 days.

Economic relief for dairy farmers; January 19 deadline
      The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced the implementation of the new Dairy Economic Loss Assistance Payment program. The 2010 Agricultural Appropriations Bill authorized $290 million for loss assistance payments to eligible dairy producers.

Right to Farm extends to farm markets
      Michigan’s Right to Farm Act and the nuisance protection it affords now clearly extends to farm markets operated by farmers on their property. On Monday, the Michigan Commission of Agriculture approved a new set of Generally Accepted Agricultural and Management Practices (GAAMPs) for farm markets.
